What Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” Verse Means To Hip Hop | True Mag

kendricklamar

TDE’s Kendrick Lamar is on his way to becoming rap royalty.  Most recently, his featured verse on Big Sean’s “Control” not only impressed listeners with his lyrical abilities, but found the Compton native slipping his name among Hip Hop greats such as Jay Z, Eminem, Nas and Andre 3000.  Going a step further, Lamar decided to aim his cross hairs on the East Coast by proclaiming himself the “King Of New York.”  Since the leak of the record, Hip Hop heads and music enthusiasts everywhere have been going back and forth on the track’s significance and Kendrick’s intentions.  Check out an excerpt from a new article spotted online over at True Magazine which breaks down the controversial verse and what it really means to Hip Hop.

Since the release of Big Sean’s “Control” which originally was set to be showcased on his upcoming Hall Of Fame LP, the topic of discussion in the world of Hip Hop has been Kendrick Lamar’s guest verse.  All over the internet and across the vast lands of social media, people have been weighing in with their thoughts behind the TDE rapper putting himself on a pedestal above his peers.

“I’m usually homeboys with the same n—s I’m rhyming wit’/but this is Hip Hop and them n—s should know what time it is/ and that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale/Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky, Drake/Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller/I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you n—s’/Tryna make sure your core fans never heard of you n—s/They don’t wanna hear not one more noun or verb from you n—s/what is competition,” raps the Compton, Calif. native.

Adding insult to injury, Kendrick’s lyrics also include: “I’m important like the Pope/I’m Muslim on pork/I’m Makaveli’s offspring/I’m the king of New York/King of the coast, one hand, I juggle them both.”

Needless to say, Lamar has single handedly sparked the fire that the industry needed in order to shift everyone’s interest back towards lyricism.  With everyone so busy turning up and focusing their efforts on “getting to the money,” artists and fans alike got too comfortable with the direction that Hip Hop found itself going in.  Though rappers have always continued to take stabs at one another from time to time, it’s been awhile since Hip Hop’s seen a respected lyricist embody that competitive spirit of the past and deliver something good enough to put our attention’s in a chokehold.

AUDIO: Big Sean – Control Feat. Kendrick Lamar & Jay Electronica

bigsean

Big Sean sent the internet into a frenzy after debuting a new track titled “Control” featuring Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica.  Though every MC delivered their respective verse, Lamar definitely stole the show after crowning himself the king of New York and aiming his sights on several big name artists such as J. Cole, Drake, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky and more.  At one point in the song the Compton native raps, “I’m usually homeboys with the same n*ggas I’m rhyming with/But this is Hip Hop and them n*ggas should know what time it is.”  Though Lamar’s lyrics only appear to be competitively driven, don’t be surprised if one of the rappers referenced in the lyrical assault capitalizes on the opportunity to go bar for bar with the Hip Hop star.

Twitter has been blowing up since Funkmaster Flex premiered the new track.  Big Sean also provided some insight behind the song when he clarified that due to sample clearing issues, “Control” was unable to make the final track list on Hall Of Fame and subsequently was leaked for our listening pleasure.  As if the G.O.O.D. Music rapper’s latest offering couldn’t get any better, Jay Electronica decides to show-up and deliver a memorable verse.  Take a listen to what all the fuss is about below.

ARTWORK: Drake Covers XXL Magazine’s 150th Issue

drake

YMCMB’s Drake covers his first solo cover for XXL magazine’s 150th issue and 16th anniversary.  This is perfect timing for the young artist as he recently performed a successful show for the annual #OVOFest and currently is in the studio prepping his third album Nothing Was The Same.  XXL’s Thomas Golianopoulos got the opportunity to sit down with Drake and address a number of topics during a two-hour interview with the former Degrassi star.  Take a look at some excerpts from the interview below.

ON THE NEW ALBUM
I remember coming into this year thinking, “How am I going to cut through all these people and shine?” I’ve never been part of a year when so many legends are dropping projects. How am I going to be seen? I’m going to be like the kid waving in the background in the photo with all of his tall relatives. And, I guess, those were my initial thoughts, and not to say that I haven’t enjoyed some of the stuff that has come out this year, but it didn’t pan out the way I thought it was going to. I think I am going for it, to really establish what are murmurs or things being said quietly, “Um, I think that Drake might actually…” On September 17th I want people to be like, “Oh, we were right.”

ON HIS IMAGE
Do I think that if I didn’t have, for lack of a better term, a unique look about me, if I was from somewhere in America and if I hadn’t been on a kids TV show [Degrassi: The Next Generation], would I be as famous? I don’t know, man. Honestly, I don’t think so. I was just some young kid on a TV show. And I haven’t become anything else while I’ve been in this position. It’s not like I got here and was like, “Oh, got to switch up my image.” I don’t wake up nervous. I feel like maybe a lot of these guys do. How old are you, really? What is your background, really? What have you really done in the drug game, in the thug game?

ON THE COMPETITION
It’s tough for me. That’s a guy I can’t pretend not to like. He’s the guy to me, in a lot of ways. That’s Kanye West. But I’m also here to be the best. I’m here to surpass. I’m here to outdo. I’m ready for whatever with anybody.

ON HIS SUCCESS
I get Jewish people coming up to me proud like, “Mazel Tov, bro. Come to my house for Shabbat dinner.”

AMANDA BYNES
I don’t even know who that is doing that or what that’s about. If that is her, I guess it’s a little weird and disturbing. It’s obviously a behavioral pattern that is way bigger than me. Whoever is behind it, whether it’s her or somebody else, they know people are paying attention so they keep it going.

Also in the magazine this month, XXL honors the 150th issue with the ultimate list of the 150 most important people, places and things in hip-hop during the XXL era. Nas looks back at Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, which turns 15. VIDEO: Drake Says Kanye West Is God To Him & His Biggest Musical Influence

Kanye West

2013’s #OVOFest jumped off with plenty of surprise guests and Revolt TV was there to capture Drake’s thoughts after performing alongside Kanye West.  Following the show, Drake admits that he hadn’t even spoken to Kanye or seen him in quite some time and was excited to see the G.O.O.D. Music head honcho show up for the annual concert.  Drake also opens up about Mr. West being the biggest influence in his career and shares his hope that the two will soon be collaborating on tracks and building more of a friendship.

Drake – All Me Feat. 2 Chainz & Big Sean

Drake decides to deliver his latest single with “All Me” featuring 2 Chainz and Big Sean off his anticipated Nothing Was The Same LP,  The YMCMB kicks the track off with a vocal sample from comedian Aziz Ansari and proceeds to drop bars about the passion behind his hustle, bagging the baddest women and his love for the cash.  2 Chainz and Big Sean complement the mellow yet infectious bouncy track alongside Drizzy for a winning combination.

VIDEO: Rihanna Twerks To Drake

While held up in a Paris hotel room with best friend Melissa Forde, Rihanna got down and busy when she decided to get her twerk on to Drake’s verse in “F*ckin’ Problems”.  The viral video recently hit the internet when Forde decided to take to instagram and post the short clip for the world to see.  One can’t help but think the move was more than likely a slight jab in the direction to singer and former boyfriend Chris Brown who is mortal enemies these days with the YMCMB rapper.  Watch as RiRi drops it and gets her eagle on in the video above.
