G.O.O.D. Music artist Big Sean caught up with Mikey Fresh and gave details on how “Control” came together with Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica. After running into issues over clearing the song’s sample, Sean shares why he decided to liberate the controversial track and speaks on its significance in Hip hop. Big Sean tells Vibe TV “Control” sparked an interest in lyricism in the game and clarifies that though he could have, he decided not to go back and adjust his verse after K. Dot submitted his feature. The Detroit native also shares that he believes Hip Hop should be competitive and says that after hearing Kendrick’s verse he was never worried about any of the mentioned rappers in his verse becoming offended. Before calling it a wrap, Sean also admits that he feels his verse on “Control” was “harder” than Kendrick’s.

Kweli reminds everyone of Hip Hop’s competitive nature and speaks on the West Coast’s aggressive and lyrically driven roots courtesy of Death Row Records and artist like Kurupt. The Brooklyn emcee also tells the camera he believes Kendrick Lamar’s I’m the “King of New York” line was really a quote from rapper Kurupt and craftily used to get his message across without crossing any lines. With a reasonable justification under his belt as an excuse, the Compton native would only have to explain that the former Death Row signee is simply an early inspiration and it was a quote used to pay homage.
Interestingly enough, Talib also makes it clear he believes that it’s too early for anyone to believe Kendrick Lamar is the greatest of all time. Before wrapping things up, Kweli addresses his tweet following the release of “Control” regarding New York artists emulating down south music.

Big Sean sent the internet into a frenzy after debuting a new track titled “Control” featuring Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica. Though every MC delivered their respective verse, Lamar definitely stole the show after crowning himself the king of New York and aiming his sights on several big name artists such as J. Cole, Drake, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky and more. At one point in the song the Compton native raps, “I’m usually homeboys with the same n*ggas I’m rhyming with/But this is Hip Hop and them n*ggas should know what time it is.” Though Lamar’s lyrics only appear to be competitively driven, don’t be surprised if one of the rappers referenced in the lyrical assault capitalizes on the opportunity to go bar for bar with the Hip Hop star.
Twitter has been blowing up since Funkmaster Flex premiered the new track. Big Sean also provided some insight behind the song when he clarified that due to sample clearing issues, “Control” was unable to make the final track list on Hall Of Fame and subsequently was leaked for our listening pleasure.
